This makes the buttons easier to press, especially when using the phone one-handed. But the new Chocolate adds an optional 2.

On the right side of the phone, the call end button and the camera launcher are gone since they live on the main keypad now. You will still find the microSD card slot and the music quick launch button on the right, along with a key lock for the touch sensitive controls which is a great thing to have on the LG VX The rear-firing speaker lives up top on the back of the phone and sounds decent for music playback.

Open the slider you will see the 1. If you are in a strong coverage area have no fear, but if you are in a marginally covered area you might only get bars in EV and 1X. The voice quality is good on the LG and volume on both incoming and outgoing calls is high.

EVDO speed is good and when the signal is strong, music, video and software download speeds are quite fast. The LG VX offers general call management features including call waiting, last number redial, speed dial 95 entries and a dedicated speakerphone key. The LG comes with a Phone Book that can store up to 1, contacts and each contact can store up to 5 numbers, 2 email addresses and a picture ID.

You can assign unique ringtones, speed dial numbers and groups to your contact entries. You can dial numbers and by name, launch messaging and find contacts, check phone status, battery life and more by giving voice commands. The GPS get signals quite fast, and accuracy is within a hundred yards in our tests in metro areas. The screen looks bright and very color saturated. The LG Chocolate VX is a nice music player with some basic features like playlist, repeat and shuffle.

Adding in most cases to the music experience are a dedicated music launch key on the right side of the Chocolate, a rear-firing speaker that sounds decent, an LG proprietary headphone jack and a 2.

The dedicated music launch key will get you to your songs in one click. We tried several 2. Sound only comes out mono. The only headset that came close was the 2. Otherwise, no more stereo output. Music track and video download speeds depends heavily upon signal strength. In strong coverage areas where the phone gets full signal strength, download speeds are very fast.

And in spotty coverage areas where the phone gets EV-DO bars, the download is slow and sometimes drops the connection to the server. Still you will experience slow frame rates, choppy audio and loss of audio sync when watching these clips. To store content, whether your own music, pictures and video or those downloaded from V CAST, you get a beefy 64 MB of internal memory just for your music tracks and another 60 MB for other content.

The photos are sharp by 1. You can tweak the settings for brightness, colors and more, and the phone has options to send photos as MMS, print them, transfer to the desktop and more.

Even though we liked the beautiful design, we thought the touch-sensitive keypad and controls required too much of a learning curve, and the initial lack of speakerphone disappointed us. With the second iteration of the LG Chocolate, however, it's clear that LG was listening to all the complaints.

The LG VX Chocolate still maintains the sleek profile that made the original famous, but its controls are now far easier to use plus it's a little slimmer and shinier than before.

Add that to its extensive multimedia feature set, and it's clear that in the LG Chocolate's case at least, sequels can indeed be better than the original. Design The LG VX Chocolate is definitely a luscious-looking handset, with a design that doesn't stray too far from the original. It retains that familiar chocolate bar shape; a rectangular chassis clad in a glossy surface and silver accents reminiscent of candy wrapping.

You slide the phone open by pushing the bottom of the phone, which can be done easily with one hand. The slider mechanism moves up and down easily, and the phone feels pretty solid in the hand and when held next to the ear.

The phone's glossy exterior does make it really prone to fingerprint smudges however. The main 2. It shows , colors at a x pixel resolution and supports 11 lines of text.

The graphics and animation looked razor sharp, and the bright colors added to the phone's overall flashy appeal. You can change the backlight time, the dial font size, and the clock format, but nothing else. Also, the display's glossy look makes it hard to see in direct sunlight because of glare. Probably the biggest design change in the LG VX Chocolate is the navigation controls underneath the display.

Gone is the annoying touch-sensitive navigation toggle, and in its place is a mechanical scroll wheel with a middle confirmation key that can be pressed--similar to that of an iPod.

This is an extremely smart move on LG's part, as it substantially lowers the learning curve for navigating the phone. Both the wheel and the middle key have a brushed-steel feel, and surrounding the wheel is a trace motion light that lights up when the wheel is turned. You can also set the trace motion light to flash differently when there's an incoming call.

The wheel scrolls very smoothly and easily; in fact, we sometimes found it was too smooth and would almost prefer more resistance so that we could get a more solid grip. The wheel can also be pressed in four different quadrants up, down, left, and right much like a traditional cell phone toggle. Each directional click can be set as shortcuts to four user-defined functions. All the other navigation keys surrounding the scroll wheel are still touch-sensitive.

They consist of two soft keys, a dedicated speakerphone key, and a Clear key. As with the original Chocolate, the keys are pretty sensitive, and need only be tapped lightly for it to activate.

Thankfully, the sensitivity of the buttons can be changed. Though we're still not huge fans of these controls, LG has thankfully added a vibration feedback setting that provides a slight vibration whenever the keys are pressed. Real-Music Ringers.
